Commissioned in honor of Bishop Jon V. Anderson on the 10th anniversary of his service to the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the hymn was first introduced in worship at the Synod Assembly in June of 2013 at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota. The tune is named KENOSIS, in reference to Christ’s act of emptying himself.
LET THE SAME MIND BE AMONG YOU
by Christine Kallman
Philippians 2:1-11
(Tune: KENOSIS by Daniel Kallman)
Refrain:
Let the same mind be among you that was in Christ our Lord:
with hearts aligned in unity,
let every one a servant be,
as Jesus gave his life to be outpoured.
Verse 1:
Christ, though in the form of God, did not exploit his worth,
but made himself as nothing. As a slave he came to earth,
and out of his unbounded love he chose a human birth.
(Refrain)
Verse 2:
Being found in human form, Christ didn’t count the cost,
but, humbling himself, knew deepest suffering and loss,
obedient to death– a brutal death upon a cross.
(Refrain)
Verse 3:
Christ surrendered all by yielding selflessly to shame,
so God raised him above the place that any could attain,
bestowing on his Son the name surpassing ev’ry name.
(Refrain)
Verse 4:
Therefore at the name of Jesus ev’ry knee should fall
and ev’ry tongue confess that he who occupied a stall
as humble servant meek– Lord Jesus Christ– is Lord of all!
(Refrain)
Verse 5:
So do nothing out of selfish drive or vain conceit,
but in humility consent to wash another’s feet,
and, joined as one in Spirit-love, partake in joy complete.
(Refrain)
